Aluminium glazing covers more than windows. Through our contractor network the scope includes aluminium windows, aluminium doors, sliding and stacking doors and frameless glass. Shopfront glazing, domestic replacement and large stacking installations are related but need different capabilities, and the size of the panels alone determines whether a contractor can handle the job.

The system matters as much as the metal. Aluminium is supplied as extrusion systems with defined profiles, gaskets, drainage paths and hardware, and mixing components between systems compromises the sealing and drainage the system was designed around. Ask which system is being quoted, because the difference between systems is far more meaningful than the difference between fabricators.

Glass frequently costs more than the frame, and specification changes it substantially. Laminated glass resists forced entry and holds together when broken; toughened glass is stronger but falls apart completely when it fails; performance coatings reduce solar heat gain on exposed elevations. Older properties replacing steel windows also need the opening made good after removal, which is regularly left out of the window quote entirely.

Aluminium is one of the few trades where a like-for-like comparison is genuinely possible, provided you ask for the system name, the glass specification and the hardware brand in writing. Do that and three quotes become comparable; without it they are three different products at three different prices. Frame Drainage, Sealing And Installation

Aluminium frames drain water rather than exclude it

Aluminium frames are designed to manage water rather than exclude it entirely. Rain driven against a window gets past the outer seal by design, collects in a drainage channel within the frame, and exits through weep holes in the bottom section. Understanding that changes how you think about leaks — a window leaking inside is usually a drainage problem rather than a sealing failure.

Blocked weep holes cause a great many aluminium window leaks. Paint applied over the frame during redecorating, silicone applied by someone trying to stop a draught, builders' debris and general dirt all block the drainage path, and water that cannot get out finds its way in. Checking that weep holes are clear is a two-minute job that prevents an expensive misdiagnosis.

Perimeter sealing and sill detailing decide whether an installation stays dry. The sill needs fall to the outside so water runs away from the opening rather than sitting against it, the gap between frame and structure needs filling and sealing correctly rather than bridged with silicone alone, and the seal at the head needs to shed water outward. Older properties replacing steel frames frequently have sills built with no fall at all, which needs correcting at installation rather than sealed over.

Removal is the part of a window job that people forget to ask about. Taking out an old steel frame damages the plaster around the opening every time, and whether the quote includes making that good — or leaves you with twelve raw openings and a painter to find — is worth establishing before you compare numbers. Hardware fails long before aluminium does. The frames typically outlast the rollers, locks and handles by decades, which makes hardware specification the decision you feel every day and the one most often left unstated in a quote. Ask what brand and model of rollers and locks are included, and whether they are a serviceable item that can be replaced later.

Large sliding and stacking panels are heavy, and the hardware has to be rated for the weight. Rollers under-specified for a heavy panel wear rapidly, the door becomes stiff, and forcing a stiff door damages the track — at which point a straightforward roller replacement becomes a track replacement. Ask what weight the rollers are rated for relative to the panels being installed.

Tracks need cleaning far more than they need replacing. Grit, sand and garden debris accumulate in the bottom track, act as an abrasive under the rollers and wear both prematurely. A vacuum and a wipe every few months does more for the life of a sliding door than any amount of lubricant, and lubricating a dirty track actively makes it worse by holding the grit in place. Coastal properties also see accelerated corrosion of hardware and benefit from rinsing salt off periodically.
