Custom Kitchens
Full kitchen designs with base and wall units, countertops and appliance integration.
Kitchens designed, built and installed by the same people in South Africa.
Measured on site, not ordered to a catalogue size
Carpentry and cabinetry covers considerably more than kitchens. Through our contractor network the scope includes carpentry and joinery, kitchen units and tops and built-in cupboards and storage. A cabinetmaker set up for a full kitchen works differently to a carpenter fitting a home office, and the pricing structure differs too.
Everything is measured on site rather than ordered to a catalogue size, and that is the whole point. Walls in most properties are not square, floors are not perfectly level, and the difference between a unit built to those actual dimensions and one adjusted to fit them is visible from across the room.
Housing stock drives the brief more than taste does. Older homes often have separate scullery and pantry rooms that owners want opened into a single working kitchen, which turns a cabinetry job into a building job. Newer townhouses and apartments need compact, made-to-measure units because standard modular sizes waste space that a small kitchen cannot afford to lose.
Cabinetry is quoted per unit or per metre, which conceals the variable that matters most: what the units are made of. Board grade, edging quality, hinge and runner brand and worktop material can multiply the same layout several times over, and two quotes with the same number of units can be describing very different kitchens. Ask for the specification in writing. We publish no rates. Tell us what you need and we will match you with contractors covering your area.
Layout before finishes — the order that matters
Layout should be settled before finishes are chosen. Where the sink, hob and fridge sit relative to each other determines whether the kitchen is comfortable to work in, and no amount of expensive door finish compensates for a poor working arrangement. Contractors worth using ask how you cook before showing you samples.
Hardware is where kitchen quality shows soonest. Hinges, drawer runners and handles are used dozens of times a day, and cheap versions sag, stick and rattle within the first year while the units around them remain sound. Ask specifically what hardware is specified — it is a small proportion of the cost and a large proportion of the daily experience.
Services need confirming before manufacture, not during installation. Where the plumbing, waste, power and extraction sit determines the design, and moving any of them afterwards means opening walls that are already tiled. Appliance provision matters too — an oven, hob or dishwasher chosen after the units are built rarely fits the space left for it.
The thing that catches people out on kitchens is not the price but the timeline. Manufacture takes weeks, stone tops are templated only after units are installed and add another week after that, and appliances ordered late hold up the whole sequence. A kitchen quoted in one figure can still leave you without a working room for longer than expected. We publish no rates. Tell us the room and how you use it and we will match you with contractors covering your area.
Interiors planned around what you actually store
Bedroom cupboards, home offices and bathroom vanities are built by the same contractors to the same standard as kitchens, and it is usually cheaper to do them at the same time because setup, delivery and installation are shared. Doing them piecemeal a year later costs more and rarely matches.
The interior configuration matters more than the doors. Hanging space, shelf heights, drawer depths and shoe storage should be planned around what you actually own rather than a standard arrangement, and the difference between a cupboard that works and one that frustrates is entirely internal.
Room conditions change what is practical. Sloping ceilings, bulkheads and out-of-square walls all need scribing and made-to-measure work rather than standard modules. Bathroom vanities need moisture-resistant board where it matters, particularly under the basin, and it is worth confirming that is actually specified rather than assumed. Older properties often have floors out of level enough to affect a floor-to-ceiling run.
We do not publish prices for cupboards or joinery. Board type, door finish, interior configuration, hardware and the size of the run all move the cost considerably, and contractor rates differ by area. Materials and hardware are priced by the contractor for your project. Tell us which rooms you want fitted and we will match you with contractors covering your area.

Housing stock drives the brief on every kitchen we place. Older homes often have separate scullery and pantry rooms that owners want opened into a single working kitchen, while newer townhouses and apartments need compact, made-to-measure units because standard modular sizes waste space. Every unit is measured on site rather than ordered to a catalogue size.
