Security work covers several systems that solve different problems. Deterrence, detection and evidence are genuinely separate objectives, and a system heavy on cameras but light on perimeter detection records an intrusion rather than preventing one.

Layers matter more than devices. A property with cameras but no perimeter detection knows about an intruder once they are inside; a property with beams, lighting and fencing is trying to stop them at the boundary. Working outward from the house to the perimeter — and putting the budget where the actual approach routes are — produces a better result than an impressive camera count.

Installation quality determines whether you keep using the system. Sensors positioned badly, beams aimed across a path pets use, or detection zones that trigger on moving branches produce false alarms — and a system that cries wolf gets disarmed within months. Getting the placement right matters more than the specification on the box, and it is the part that distinguishes an experienced installer from someone fitting equipment.

Alarm Systems And Detection

Wired and wireless suit different situations

Alarm systems divide broadly between wired and wireless, and each suits a different situation. Wired and hybrid panels such as Paradox are long established, well supported by installers across South Africa, and avoid battery maintenance on detection devices — but running cable through a finished house means chasing walls. Wireless systems such as Ajax retrofit into an existing property without that disruption and are strongly app-oriented, at the cost of batteries in every device that need managing over time.

Zoning should reflect how you actually live rather than how the house is laid out. A system that cannot be armed at night with people moving between bedrooms and a bathroom will simply be left off, and one that treats the whole house as a single zone forces an all-or-nothing choice. Partial arming, sensible zone grouping and a stay mode that works are what determine whether a system gets used every night or only when you go away.

Signalling deserves attention because it is how the alarm reaches anyone. Systems relying solely on a mobile network connection fail when signal drops or a SIM lapses; systems relying solely on the internet fail during an outage that takes the router down with it. Dual-path signalling, or at minimum a battery-backed router, addresses that. Battery-powered wireless devices also need a maintenance rhythm — a system that quietly stops reporting from a sensor is worse than no system, because you believe you are covered.

The cost most people underestimate on an alarm is the part that recurs. Monitoring is billed monthly for as long as you keep it, armed response is a separate contract again, and SIM or connectivity charges continue quietly in the background. Ask what the system does if you stop paying for monitoring, because some panels revert to local siren operation and others become considerably less useful. We publish no rates. CCTV, Recording And Camera Placement

Placement matters more than resolution

Camera brand matters less than most buyers expect, largely because the major manufacturers span enormous quality ranges. Hikvision and ProVision ISR both offer everything from entry-level domestic units to professional-grade equipment, so specifying by brand alone tells you almost nothing. What actually determines whether footage is usable is the sensor and lens on the specific model, the night performance, and above all where the camera is pointed.

Placement beats resolution consistently. A high-resolution camera surveying an entire garden produces footage in which nobody can be identified, while a modest camera covering an entry point at face height produces footage that is actually useful. Coverage of approach routes, gates and doors at a sensible distance is worth more than a higher specification pointed at everything in general.

Two practical things get overlooked on camera systems. The first is retention — footage that has already been overwritten is worthless, and incidents are often noticed days later, so storage should cover a genuinely useful period rather than the shortest the recorder allows. The second is network security: IP cameras and recorders left on default passwords, with firmware never updated, or exposed directly to the internet for remote viewing, become a liability rather than a protection. Ask specifically how remote access is provided and whether credentials were changed.

Camera system pricing depends on the model tier, the number of cameras, the recorder and storage capacity, and whether cabling can be run easily. The same brand can produce quotes that differ several times over depending on which line is specified, which is why the model and its low-light performance belong in the quote rather than just a camera count.
